Elaine Jean Griswold, age 78, of Grand Haven went to be with her Lord on May 9, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born August 4, 1930 in Grand Haven to Milo and Jennie (Helmers) Sovis. She married Percival “Jim” Griswold on July 31, 1947 in Grand Haven.
Elaine was a member of Second Reformed Church of Grand Haven. Her hobby of over 50 years was knitting. She enjoyed making articles for family, friends, and local charities. Elaine was active in scouting, church organizations, and square dance clubs. Other activities included bowling, golfing, cross country skiing, travel, and camping.
Elaine is survived by her husband of nearly 62 years, Percival “Jim” Griswold; her two daughters: Beverly Singerling of Spring Lake, and Barbara (Dan) Banta of Grand Haven; a son, Rodney (Brenda) Griswold of Grand Haven; four grandchildren: Christopher (Sandy) Singerling, Heather Singerling, Kevin (Amanda) Banta, Kellie Banta and fiancé Ben Brakke; three great-grandchildren: Katy and Natalie Singerling and Ethan Banta; a sister, Beverly (Robert) Avery of Grand Haven; three brothers: Robert (Rose) Sovis of Jupiter, FL, Douglas (Diana) Sovis, and Kenneth Sovis, both of Grand Haven. Also surviving is Larry Kimball, a close family friend, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her parents and a son, Ronald James Griswold, preceded her in death.
A service celebrating Elaine’s life will be held Thursday, May 14, 2009, at 11:00 AM from Second Reformed Church with Rev. James VanderMeiden officiating. Friends may meet the family Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Contributions to Hospice of North Ottawa Community at Heartwood Lodge or to Second Reformed Church of Grand Haven are appreciated.
