Obituary:
Alice Jean Huls, age 91, of Grand Haven passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at a local care facility. She was born July 20, 1917, in Grand Rapids to Henry and Nellie (VerMeer) Bastianse, and she married Edward Huls on May 21, 1941, in Grand Rapids. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1980. Alice was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven where she had previously served as a deaconess. She was a member of the weekly prayer group and the MSU Home Extension Group, and she enjoyed bowling, knitting, and spending time with her family. She is survived by a son-in-law, Dan (Joan) Groenhout of Grand Haven; a daughter-in-law, Joann (Mike) VanDyke of Grand Haven; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Pearl (Pete) VanderLoon and Trudie (Cornelius) Jonker, both of Jenison, and Bernice (Harvey) Kingma of Grand Rapids. She was preceded in death by her son, Edward Huls, Jr. on December 5, 1990, her daughter, Joyce Groenhout on January 27, 1992, and her sister, Eleanor VanDam. The service for Alice will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2009, at First Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven with Rev. James H. Scholten officiating. Friends may meet the family 4-8 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lake Forest Cemetery.
