Obituary:
Mr. James L. Lahey, age 88, of Spring Lake, passed away October 1, 2009. He was born September 18, 1921, in Lynn, Indiana, and graduated from the RCA institute of Chicago in 1940. He was one of the first employees of an experimental TV station in Chicago until the entire staff entered the Navy in 1941. He taught engineering in the Navy, eventually being commissioned as an officer and serving as Chief Engineer of the US Navy Public Relations Network in the Pacific. After WWII, he returned to WBKB in Chicago as an engineer and pioneered many of the early developments in broadcast television. In the early fifties he became President of Dage TV and was nominated for an Emmy for Technical Achievement. In 1961 he entered the Cable TV industry as President of Entron Electronics and for the next 21 years he developed dozens of cable systems throughout the US. In 1972, along with his son Ken he formed Muskegon Cable TV. He served on the National Cable TV Association’s Board of Directors and was the Chairman of its Technical Committee. He retired to Florida in 1982 and opened a woodworking studio in the Miami Beach Art Center. His work was featured in an episode of Miami Vice. A private pilot for 45 years, he flew his own twin-engine plane all over the US and Caribbean. He was a member of the Muskegon and Miami Beach Rotary Clubs and a Paul Harris Fellow. He remained in Florida until returning to Grand Haven in 2007 to be near his family. He is survived by two daughters, Diane (David) Lindsell of Gaithersburg, MD, and Tasha Vosburg (Wayne Barker) of Portland, Maine; and son Kenneth Lahey of Grand Haven. Also surviving him are four grandchildren, Angela, Brian, Chad, and Amanda; and great-granddaughters Morgan and Emily. The family will be holding a private ceremony at a later date.
