Lloyd Dell Berwald, age 84, of Spring Lake passed away Saturday, October 3, 2009, at Heartwood Lodge Hospice House. He was born August 6, 1925 in Racine, Wisconsin to Herman and Gertrude (Fauska) Berwald, and married Patricia Lemke on March 4, 1977 in Spring Lake. Pat preceded him in death on October 4, 1997.
Lloyd retired from Johnston Boiler after 45 years working and enjoyed traveling around the world with his work. Lloyd served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II and was a member the VFW Sgt. Alvin Jonker Post #2326, American Legion Post #28, the Elks Lodge and the Spring Lake Country Club where he enjoyed golf and playing cards with his friends. He also enjoyed cooking and watching over his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving children: Kathy (Pat) Berwald of Washington, MI, Mark Berwald of Tampa, FL, Alanna (Joe) VanHoeven, Patti Bernard, Cindy Nagtzaam, Larry (Cathe) Lemke, all of the Tri-Cities, Bill (Michelle) Lemke of Chesapeake, VA; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Mike Bernard and brother, Ray Berwald.
A service to celebrate Lloyd’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Chapel in Spring Lake with Rev. Peter Theune officiating. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard. Friends may meet the family Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Spring Lake Cemetery.
