Obituary:
Mr. Harvey James Marter, Jr., age 88, of Spring Lake, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2009. He was born June 20, 1921 in Roseville, MI to Harvey and Rose (Patow) Marter, Sr. and has lived in this area since 1956. He was a proud member of the US Army and served in the European Theater during WWII, he was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He owned and operated Harvey’s Pontaluna Club and later managed Harvey’s Restaurant and Bowling Center and loved spending time with his grandchildren. On November 20, 1948 he married Beatrice Crist in Detroit and she preceded him in death in 1983. He later married Opal Maleze and she preceded him in death in 2007. He is survived by 3 sons: Harvey (Merry) Marter III of Alto, MI, Keith (Lori) Marter of Robinson Township, and Kenneth Marter of Washington DC; and 3 grandchildren: Nicole, Marcy, and Justin. He is also survived by a sister, Shirley Sirois; sister-in-law, Midge Marter; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters: Myrtle Marter, Florence Smith, and Marion Miller; and 2 brothers, Harold and Clarence Marter. The family would like to thank everyone in the ICU at North Ottawa Community Hospital. SERVICES will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Spring Lake Presbyterian Church with Pastor Dan Anderson officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 6-9 PM Friday at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home of Spring Lake. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28 Honor Guard. Interment will take place in Spring Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Spring Lake Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
