Carl H. Haakana, age 87, of Spring Lake died Saturday, October 31, 2009, at North Ottawa Community Hospital.
Carl was born October 16, 1922, in Rolla, ND to Rev. John and Hannah (Ruotsalainen) Haakana. He was raised in New York Mills, MN. Carl proudly served during WWII in the Navy Air Corps from 1942-1945 after which he graduated from the University of Minnesota and married the former Della A. Kay on November 20, 1949 in Basswood, MN. Carl retired after 30 years from Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, MI, where he was a supervising electrical engineer. Nineteen years ago, he moved from Redford Township to Spring Lake. Carl was a dedicated member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where he served the congregation in many ways, including Elder and choir member.
Carl was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his loving wife, Della; daughter Kay VandenElst, son-in-law Bob VandenElst, grandson Matt VandenElst of Grand Rapids, MI; daughter Jean Haakana and Bette Bussel of Wayland, MA; son-in-law Charles Resh and granddaughter Jaclyn Resh of Sarasota, FL, as well as several nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his daughter, Christine Resh, his parents, two sisters, and five brothers.
The Funeral Service for Carl will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 5, 2009, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael Goers officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #28. Friends are invited to meet the family Wednesday 5-8 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at Spring Lake Cemetery.
