Mr. William Mertz, age 65, of Spring Lake died suddenly Christmas day at North Ottawa Community Hospital. Bill was born July 11, 1944 in Detroit to Eugene R. and Lillian June (Simko) Mertz. Bill served his country proudly during the Vietnam War in the Air Force and returned home to marry Linda M. Reynolds on April 19, 1969 in St. Clair Shores, MI.
Bill and Linda had recently moved to the area from Gypsum, Colorado to be near their family after Bill retired from the Eagle County Transit System and Linda retired from Vail Valley Medical Center. Prior to living in Colorado, Bill and Linda lived and worked in Oscoda, MI where Bill owned an appraisal business. Bill was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, biking, and canoeing. He was also an ardent sportsman and fan. Although he loved playing all sports, he was passionate about playing fast-pitch softball and hockey.
Bill leaves behind his loving family including his wife, Linda, a daughter, Debi Mertz-Hulverson and her husband Rob of Spring Lake, a son, Bill Mertz Jr. of Manistee, a granddaughter, Eliza, four brothers, mother and father-in-law, Donald and Geraldine Reynolds of Centerline, MI, and several nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents.
