Norma R. Mastenbrook, age 81, of Grand Haven passed away Monday, February 15, 2010, at the Heartwood Lodge Hospice Residence. She was born March 21, 1928, in Grand Rapids, MI, to Victor and Rosalind (Mindeman) Klatt, and she married Warren E. Mastenbrook on September 12, 1947, in Grand Rapids. He preceded her in death on August 18, 2009. Norma was affectionately known as “Tutu” by family and friends.
Norma raised her family in Traverse City and in the Grand Rapids area. She and her husband, Warren, also hosted two foreign exchange students, Hajimu from Japan and Paulo Rebelo from Brazil. Norma later spent almost 20 years of retirement living on the Big Island of Hawaii with her husband. Norma was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary Carl A. Johnson Post #2 in Grand Rapids, MI, and a member of the Michigan PTA Board, having served 25 years with both organizations. She also served as president of both the Western Michigan Genealogical Society and the Hawaii Genealogical Society and was a member of the Caledonia Womens Club and the Hilo [Hawaii] Womens Club. Norma also served as secretary for Hawaiian Paradise Park Hui and was a founding member of Hawaiian SeniorNet.
She is lovingly remembered by four sons: Michael (Sandy) Mastenbrook of Pinckney, MI, Patrick (Sandie) Mastenbrook of Hudsonville, MI, Timothy (Cher) Mastenbrook of Lowell, MI, and Gary (Mary) Mastenbrook of Schaumburg, IL; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Gloria (Donald) Dayhuff of Erie, CO; and a brother, Victor Klatt, Jr. of Grand Rapids, MI.
The service for Norma will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2010, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Barbara Tesorero officiating. Friends may meet the family following the service at the Hunters Woods Community Center in Grand Haven Township. Memorial contributions in honor of Norma may be given to Hospice of North Ottawa Community at Heartwood Lodge or the American Legion Auxiliary Carl A. Johnson Post #2.
