Michael F. O’Brien, age 62, of Grand Haven, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Michael was born June 21, 1947, in Grand Rapids. He attended St. John’s Episcopal Church and was a member of the American Legion – Charles A. Conklin Post #28. He was a 1966 graduate of Grand Haven High School and attended Eastern Michigan University. Michael was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served his country proudly in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his daughter, Heather Kristine O’Brien of Dearborn Heights, MI; step-daughter, Teresa Brown of New York; step-son, Aaron Brown of Hilo, Hawaii; brothers, Kirk (Sue) Smith of Brighton, MI; and Jim Smith of Norwalk, CA; sister-in-law: Lexie O’Brien of Spring Lake. He is also survived by nieces: Holly (Scott), Elizabeth, and Abigail (Ian); also special friends, Ann Saigeon, Susan Spoelma, and Gail Bowdish. He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Richard O’Brien and brother, Patrick O’Brien.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Henry Idema III, Ph.D. officiating. Friends may meet the family following the service for a luncheon in the family center. Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or St. John’s Episcopal Church are appreciated.
